Sarajevo blog: Day 2: Meeting the workers

An early start to a productive day began with Fajr prayers at Ferhadija Masjid.

With a strong and steaming hot Bosanska Kafa we were set for the day ahead which involved meetings with various community leaders who talked us through the minute details of the welfare system and how resources are allocated towards tackling poverty and assisting those in need.

We met Ibrahim Malanovic, Director of Social Care who painstakingly talked us through the process involved in providing support to individuals and families.

This involves a formal referral which is verified by the local Mufti followed by medical and social assessments.

If the criteria is met after rigorous checks are completed then an individual or family receive appropriate support and there is a follow up system designed to check that the process is not abused. This is all designed with the utmost regard for donors and their generosity.

We were honoured to be granted an audience with Hussein Smajic – the Deputy Grand Mufti of Bosnia, who spoke in the simplest terms about the need for people to think of themselves and one other and how this could be a global movement for change in the fight against poverty.

During our meetings we were made aware of a family who have freshly submitted an application to receive a cow for income generation for day to day living needs and we have agreed to fund the costs to support them. We are £1000 short.

Our presence has made the local front page news.

Tomorrow we are off to Srebrenica

Sarajevo blog: Day 1: Team Bosnia touchdown

Emdad Rahman

We are with the Bosnia Trust this weekend and will be spending the next few days delivering and surveying projects which we are supporting.

We have spent today travelling to our destination after a half day at work. I took the train to work today and didn’t cycle or drive at all.

It was strange being packed into the sardine tin riding the District Line to work and I kept thinking of fellow commuters who do this day in and day out.

I met with London Enterprise Academy Head Teacher Ashid Ali who very kindly supplied some goodies to distribute in Sarajevo during our travels.

After lunch the team made their way to the Queen’s terminal to board Austrian Airlines from London Heathrow to Vienna from where we caught a connecting flight to Sarajevo.

The journey was extremely smooth and passport control at the Medunarodmi Arrodrom Sarajevo was straightforward and welcoming.

Upon arrival we were met by Samir and Jasmin who drove us the short distance to our hostel.

Our strategy meeting has just concluded over a tasty local dinner and we are all set for Friday where we will have a very long day in the field, meeting, greeting our hosts and befriending aid recipients.

We look forward to forging new relationships, meeting dignitaries, coaching, teaching and being inspired by the inhabitants of this beautiful country.

It should be a very interesting day ahead.

If anyone wishes to donate towards the cow project to empower and assist a Bosnian family and help them come out of poverty into prosperity please visit http://www.bosniatrust.com/donate
